Peirce Collections

The Peirce Edition Project has acquired four major collections: the Peirce Collection, the Max H. Fisch Collection, the Carolyn Eisele Collection, and the Charles W. Morris Collection.

Max H. Fisch Collection

Max Harold Fisch (1901-1995) was an internationally renowned scholar and recognized especially for his work on Charles S. Peirce and Giambattista Vico. Fisch received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1928 (or was it 1930???). Fisch’s outstanding scholarship and strong leadership guided the Peirce Edition Project during his tenure as Senior Editor. The library at the Peirce Edition Project has been named after Fisch in his honor. In 1959 the Philosophy Department of Harvard University invited Fisch to be the official biographer of Peirce. Fisch spent nearly forty years collecting research to write Peirce’s biography. Fisch never completed the biography project. However, he did leave a legacy of scholarly information with the Peirce Edition Project. Fisch served as President of the Western Division of the American Philosophical Association, President of the Charles S. Peirce Society, President of the Semiotic Society of America, and President of the C.S. Peirce Foundation. Fisch wrote many books, including Peirce, Semiotic and Pragmatism (1986); Philosophy in America from the Puritans to James (1939); and Classic American Philosophers: Peirce, James, Royce, Santayana, Dewey, Whitehead: Selections From Their Writings (1996).

Books

The Max H. Fisch Collection includes numerous books. Many of these books are now out of print. Fisch’s books range in topics and include philosophy (classical, medieval, modern, and contemporary), the classics, literature, history, psychology, religious studies, science, languages, Charles S. Peirce, and Giambattista Vico.
Papers

The Max H. Fisch Collection contains over 110 linear feet of files and papers which include correspondence, lectures, notes, published articles, pamphlets, conference programs, newspaper clippings, and other items connected with his research.

Reference Catalog

During his forty years of researching Charles S. Peirce, Max H. Fisch compiled a comprehensive Reference Catalog, which is part of the Max H. Fisch Collection. The Reference Catalog is divided by subject, chronological year, and manuscript number in accordance with the Robin Catalog. The Reference Catalog contains Peirce quotes and information about his writings, professional dealings, colleagues, family, and personal life.

Charles W. Morris Collection

Charles W. Morris (1903-1979) earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Northwestern University and his Ph.D. in Philosophy at the University of Chicago where he studied under George Herbert Mead. Morris taught at Rice University, the School of Design in Chicago, and was a visiting lecturer at Harvard, Yale, Brown, Columbia, Stanford, Vassar, and many other educational institutions. He served as President of the Western Division of the American Philosophical Association and was a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Morris edited a collection of G.H. Mead’s lectures, Mind, Self, and Society, and was Associate Editor of the International Encyclopedia of Unified Science. Morris wrote many books, including Writings on the General Theory of Signs; The Pragmatic Movement in American Philosophy; Paths of Life: Preface to a World Religion; Signification and Significance: A Study of the Relations of Signs and Values; Mind, Self, and Society From the Standpoint of a Social Behaviorist; Varieties of Human Value; Foundations of the Theory of Signs; Six Theories of Mind; and Logical Positivism, Pragmatism, and Scientific Empiricism. Morris brought many German philosophers to the United States at the start of World War II. He was involved in the Unity of Science Movement, Vienna Circle of logical positivism, and developed an original form of pragmatism.

Books

The Charles W. Morris Collection includes many of the books that Morris wrote and edited. Morris’s books include the subjects of American philosophy, religious studies, C.S. Peirce, and G.H. Mead. The Morris Collection has several journals, including the International Journal of Ethics, which was renamed Ethics: An International Journal of Social, Political, and Legal Philosophy, and encompasses the years 1905-1948.

Papers

The papers of Charles W. Morris include personal and professional correspondence, lectures, reviews, lecture notes of courses taken from G.H. Mead, unpublished papers, a finding list of Morris books donated to the University of Florida, bibliographies, articles written by Morris and others, pamphlets, Morris’s Ph.D. dissertation, copies of Peirce papers with Morris’s annotations, newspaper clippings, poems, scrapbooks, and a few vinyl records with Morris’s lectures.

Carolyn Eisele Collection

Carolyn Eisele (1902-2000) taught mathematics at Hunter College for nearly 50 years. She was a renown mathematician, historian of late 19th- and early 20th-century mathematics and science, and expert on the life and works of Charles S. Peirce. Eisele brought Peirce’s mathematical ideas to the attention of international scholars. She was awarded a Doctor of Humanities degree by Texas Tech University and an honorary Doctorate of Science by Lehigh University. Eisele wrote and edited many books, including Studies in the Scientific and Mathematical Philosophy of Charles S. Peirce (1979), Essays by Carolyn Eisele (date?), The New Elements of Mathematics by Charles S. Peirce (date?), and Historical Perspectives on Peirce’s Logic of Science: A History of Science (1985). Eisele was a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, New York Academy of Science, American Mathematics Society, Mathematics Association of America, and the American Philosophical Association. She served as President of the Charles S. Peirce Society and was a member of the Board of Advisors for the Peirce Edition Project from 1982 until her death. She was married to Morris Halpern. The Eisele Collection is helpful to scholars researching Eisele’s life and work as well as Peirce’s writings and work on mathematics.

Books

The Carolyn Eisele Collection includes numerous books in mathematics, science, history of science, philosophy, and the books that she wrote and edited.
Papers

Eisele’s Papers have a chronological range of 1928-1996. The papers include Eisele’s correspondence, lectures, notes, speeches, articles, drafts of her publications, galley proofs, copies of Peirce manuscripts, book reviews, newspaper clippings, copies of grant applications, conference programs, and other miscellaneous items she collected during her lifetime.
Morris Halpern Papers

(include picture of Halpern) (Links to Electronic Archives Catalog)
Morris Halpern (1893-1963) is believed to have immigrated to the United States from Russia in 1906. Even though Halpern lacked a formal education in his youth, he enrolled in Columbia University and received a Master of Arts degree in 1909 and a Ph.D. in 1911. Halpern moved to Los Angeles and worked as a music director for a radio station and later began teaching voice lessons. Carolyn Eisele was a voice student of Halpern’s. He followed her back to New York City in 1936 and they were married in 1943. Halpern continued giving Eisele voice lessons until the early 1950s.

The Morris Halpern Papers consist mostly of Halpern’s personal correspondence with Vera Gladstone (his common law wife before marrying Eisele), Carolyn Eisele, the soprano Elsa Alsen, composer and NBC orchestra leader Rex Dunn, Frances Dunn (Rex Dunn’s wife), and actress/singer Kitty Carlisle. The Halpern Papers contain biographical information for Morris and Vera Halpern, miscellaneous and fragmentary writings by Halpern, financial and legal documents, photographs, comments by Halpern on his work with Eisele, and letters of condolence and memorials sent to Eisele upon his death. The Morris Halpern Papers are insightful to scholars researching Eisele’s life as well as the New York music scene of the 1930s and 1940s.

Edward C. Moore Collection

Edward C. Moore (1917-1993) was the founding director of the Peirce Edition Project.
